Ladies, This Is Why You Should NEVER Use A Vaginal Tightening Stick

There is now a new craze for the usage of vagina tightening sticks, or wands for ladies out there who feel their down below is not as tight as it should be.

These are sticks of made of ground up plants, herbs, and other mysterious substances, that those worried about their tightness are encouraged to insert inside their vaginas for two minutes and they are being sold online.

The sellers promise that the stick will tighten and ‘clean’ the vagina, with one company suggesting the resulting tightness will ‘make you feel wanted again.’

Right. So this is for our partners. So he’ll want us again – now that our vaginas aren’t giant caves of despair.

It’s also claimed that the sticks will eliminate vaginal discharge.

And this is where we remind everyone, once again, that the vagina is a self-cleaning, self-regulating, generally wonderful thing.

It’s not supposed to be a pencil-narrow suction cup, and it’s most definitely NOT supposed to be discharge-free (discharge is all part of our lovely cleaning process. Accept it. Love it).

We won’t even get into the very damaging idea that women need to ‘tighten ourselves’ to make themselves desirable to men, because frankly, we could argue on about that for hours.

So let’s just focus on all the potential negative effects these sticks could have on your vagina, remembering that these products have not been properly tested or regulated by any health-themed governing body.

Dr Jen Gunter explains that the chemicals in these sticks work to temporarily dry out the vagina – a very bad thing.

She writes: ‘The lack of wetness and pain from the resulting abrasions may also cause the pelvic floor to spasm during sex (not in a good way) and this will tighten the vaginal opening (which can make insertion painful).

‘Practices that dry the vagina are known to increase the transmission of sexually transmitted infections. never mind make sex painful for the woman.

‘If the Japanese vaginal stick can only be inserted for 2 minutes then it is almost certainly a direct caustic effect from chemicals.

‘But if it does have some effect on the vagina it’s like over washing your hands until they are dried and cracked and bleeding, but achieved in 2 minutes. In the vagina.’

Ouch.

And, as Dr Jen reminds us, vaginas are SUPPOSED to be relaxed and wet during sex. That’s what makes sex pleasurable.

So, to recap. Please, please do not use herbal sticks to ‘tighten’ your vagina. Don’t put any herbs up there, in fact.

If you’re genuinely feeling concerned about tightness, we’d recommend trying kegels.

Your vagina is amazing and can pretty much left alone to do its business. Love it and leave it be.

Scientists Develop Super Condoms That Kill HIV Virus and Boosts Sexual Pleasure (Photo)

A team of scientists in America have invented a new type of condom that is capable of killing the HIV virus while enhancing pleasure.

The new hydrogel-based condom

A new hydrogel-based condom that contains antioxidants has been invented by a team of Indian-American scientists at the Texas A&M University Health Science Center.

It was gathered that not only does it contain plant-based antioxidants, which kills the HIV-virus in case of condom breakage but it also uses antioxidants to enhance pleasure.

Experts say it is the new big player to join the fight against AIDS

"We are not only making a novel material for condoms to prevent the HIV infection, but we are also aiming to eradicate this infection if possible. Supercondom could help fight against HIV infection and may as well prevent unwanted pregnancy or sexually transmitted diseases. If we succeed, it will revolutionize the HIV prevention initiative"

Choudhury, the lead researcher and assistant professor at the Texas A&M Health Science Center's Irma Lerma Rangel College of Pharmacy, said the researchers hope to test the condom within the next six months and then get it released for general usage.

Lady Addicted to Selfies Who Spends 23hrs a Day Online, Develops a Painful Disease (Photos)

A young selfie addicted lady who spent up to 23 hours a day online, is currently seeking help after developing a painful disease caused by hunching over her laptop.

Michelle Gore

21-year-old lady identified as Michelle Gore, from Bracknell, Berkshire, United Kingdom, who became so obsessed with technology that she took 200 selfies a day and used her phone in the shower, has warned others of the dangers after developing a rare medical condition.

It was learnt that she spends up to 23 hours online every day and was thrilled to receive some latest gadgets at Christmas of 2014. However after spending hours hunching over a selection of devices including a tablet, phone and laptop, she was diagnosed with Tietze disease in January last year.

Michelle, who graduated from the University of Bath in July 2015, said; "I would end up spending the entire holidays glued to a screen of some sort – whether it was watching a YouTube tutorial to work out how to use my new phone, or trawling an internet forum for tips."

"I was never without my phone or some other device because I couldn’t bear to miss out on updates from apps like Snapchat, Instagram or WhatsApp. I’d be taking selfies all day as many as 200 just to get the perfect shot that I could post online.

And before I went to bed I’d play games on my PlayStation or Xbox or watch Netflix, but just so I didn’t miss out, I’d leave my phone on all night in case a message came through.

I even specially requested a waterproof phone for Christmas last year, just so I could stay online in the shower."

Her Doctor said her addiction had put a strain on her rib cartilage, causing the inflammatory disorder which is characterised by chest pain and swelling between the upper ribs.

"Sometimes I was getting just one hour of sleep a night and that meant I struggled to focus during the day. I’d take my phone to lectures with me and found it hard to concentrate. As a result, my grades suffered and while I got a degree, I didn’t get the result I wanted.

I don’t know how long I can keep this up. I got the shakes I am sweating and unstable... and I am bored out my mind. I look in the mirror and I am a mess...My hair is a tangled mess... the colour from my face is gone... my once so lively eyes never looked so lifeless.... it’s like staring at a zombie version of myself."

Now she is warning others about the dangers of getting too hooked on technology and has made a hard-hitting video highlighting the perils with the charity Fixers. Recovered Michelle who is also a graphic designer, said; "

I realised I had a problem when I woke up on Boxing Day 2014 tangled up in cables from different gadgets. I had the laptop wire round my leg, my headphones around my neck, my mobile under my pillow, my tablet charging on my bedside table and my Xbox and PlayStation controls at the foot of the bed. I thought, "this isn’t normal".

And when Michelle began experiencing shooting pains in her back and chest, she knew something was seriously wrong. She said: "I was in pain every day and I was worried there was something up with my heart so I went to see my GP in January last year."

I was at breaking point so I confessed how long I’d been spending on my gadgets. She said I’d strained my costal cartilage from being in the same position for so long staring at my phone or hunching over my laptop. It came as a real shock but luckily it was the wake-up call I needed to sort myself out."

Dr Richard Graham, Consultant Adolescent Psychiatrist and Technology Addiction Lead at the Nightingale Clinic, UK, said the addiction is complex to treat.

"Unlike with alcohol or drugs, a patient cannot simply decide never to use a technology again. Instead, they must learn to establish a healthy relationship with technology and that is the crux of the treatment; sleep and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy are peripheral treatments that treat conditions that can sometimes coexist with technology addiction.

He added: "We need technology in our lives and it brings a host of benefits. It can however, drain us of our time as we spend more and more time online. This can become a compulsion to constantly be plugged in so that we don’t ever risk feeling that we are missing out, or stepping off a ladder. The by-product of this is that we are seeing an increasing number of young people addicted to technology."

Hand washing: A call to national hygiene

Hand Washing

When Ebola broke out in the country a year ago, hand washing became norm in many public places, offices, banks, restaurants, even some super markets mandated their customers to wash hands before entering their places. Many Nigerians cultivated the habit of having hand sanitizers wherever they go, but a year after, Nigerians relapsed to the old practice of not washing hands regularly. The truth remains that regular washing of hands, though a simple action, go a long way in reducing infections, diseases and virus as well as enhance safety across all sectors.

Report has it that every year, about 1.7 billion cases of childhood diarrhea are recorded and over 1 trillion germs can live inside 1 gram of poop (about the weight of a paper clip). But a simple act of hand washing with soap can reduce the risk of diarrhea diseases by up to 47 percent.
Studies further revealed that hand washing with soap is cost-efficient and a smart investment for all countries, as $3.35 investment in hand washing can bring the same health benefits in terms of thousands of dollars in immunization investment. In fact, hand washing has been adjudged as a simple but effective vaccine.

15th October of every year marks another time to remind everyone the need to cultivate the habit of hand washing,  this year’s theme: “Raise a hand for hygiene” is action-oriented; when people raise a hand, they can also be counted in terms of hand washing. It is a reminder that it is possible for government to count how many people wash their hands and have access to hygiene facilities in homes, schools, and healthcare centers. Government must measure hygiene indicators to know where resources should be concentrated.

Country Representative of WaterAid in Nigeria, Dr. Michael Ojo, lamented that it was so unfortunate that too many children in Nigeria still die every year before their fifth birthday as a result of diarrhea and other diseases related to unsafe water and lack of basic sanitation and hygiene. “What is even sadder is the lack of access to the simple measures such as hand washing with soap which can help prevent diarrhea, pneumonia, and other diseases that stop many children from reaching their 5th birthday,” he lamented.

He added that hand washing with soap has an important role to play in child survival and health. It is also a cost-effective intervention that drastically reduce the incidence of diarrhea and respiratory infections among children under five. The theme for this year’s Global Hand washing Day: “Raise a hand for hygiene” couldn’t be more fitting, he noted.

Ojo noted that hand washing with soap is the most effective and inexpensive way to prevent diarrhea and acute respiratory infections, which take the lives of millions of children in developing countries every year. He maintained that these two infections are responsible for the majority of all child deaths. Yet, despite its life-saving potential, hand washing with soap is seldom practiced and difficult to promote.

The Principal, Government Secondary School Gaube Abuja, Mr Segun Bankole while speaking during the official hand over of Solar pump water borehole and hygiene materials to the school by Oxfam and Lebera Foundation, harped on the need to sustain hand washing culture among school children so as to prevent the spread of diseases.

He noted that ever since the spread of Ebola disease, he had written several times to the Ministry of Education demanding for the construction of borehole and provision of hygiene facilities for the school to no avail. He lamented that since the three years of existence of the school they have lacked portable water source and hygiene facilities, but stressed that despite the lack of potable water in the school, he always encouraged the students to go to the nearest source of water (which is about 5 kilometers to the school) in other to ensure that the students practiced good hygiene. So it was a dream come true when Lebera Foundation in partnership with Oxfam donated a solar pump water borehole for them.

Many government owned schools lack hygiene facilities and these have affected the ability of their health science teachers to actually train school children on proper washing of hands. Although there are different hand washing methods, most of the procedures are very similar in nature. Symbolic hand rinsing where a person may just put their hands under a running tap is not the proper way to cleanse them thoroughly.

Hygiene is the practice of keeping oneself and one’s environment clean as well as free of infection risk. Though many hygiene practices can assist in preventing disease, the one with the strongest evidence of effectiveness and cost-efficient in developing countries is hand washing with soap. Hands are vectors that can transport disease agents from person to person directly or indirectly via surfaces.
Hands that have been in contact with faeces, nasal excretions and other bodily fluids, and not adequately washed, can vehicle large numbers of viruses, bacteria and possibly other parasites.

They can also carry pathogens from contaminated sources such as animal feaces bird feaces, contaminated foods, domestic or wild animals to new susceptible hosts. Hand washing is very important where people congregate like schools, offices, including  where ill or vulnerable people are concentrated such as hospitals, nursing homes among others. Pathogens could also spread where food is prepared and shared and in homes, especially where there are young children and vulnerable adults.

In developing countries, the biggest killers of young children are respiratory infections and diarrhea diseases and both are preventable via hand washing. Other diseases that are of public health importance with less impact of hand washing include  helminth infections (especially ascariasis)and eye infections, especially trachoma; others include shigellosis, typhoid, cholera, acute respiratory infections, etc.

There is strong evidence that hand washing with soap can considerably reduce the incidence of diarrhea and acute respiratory infections in children. The use of soap (or other mediums like sand or ash) has the added benefit that it increases the contact time, facilitates friction and breaks down grease and dirt (which contain the largest concentrations of microbes). The use of soap in addition results in fresh and clean smelling hands, which makes promotion much easier.
Furthermore, studies have showed that hand washing with soap is more effective than hand washing with only water to reduce fecal bacteria on hands.

Keeping your hands clean by following proper washing and drying procedures, is vital to stopping the spread of germs in kitchens and food production areas. Your hands are used every day to touch many things such as food, pets, and common items like doorknobs and handles. All of these have germs and bacteria on them, which in turn can easily be transported by your hands. Washing them is a simple and effective way to stop these germs and to help prevent diseases, such as colds, flu, and food poisoning.

Water by itself will not be able to remove many fats, oils, and proteins, all of which can harbour germs. For effective cleaning you should use the procedure below as a way to clear away as much bacteria as possible:
• If you are wearing any rings then it is best to take them off first.
• First of all wet your hands thoroughly with running water (preferably mild in temperature, but it can be hot or cold).
• Apply soap (antibacterial soap isn’t necessary, any bar or liquid soap will do).
• Start to rub your hands together to make a lather, make sure you scrub both sides of your hands, between your fingers, your wrists and under your nails.
• Keep rubbing them for at least 20 seconds (it may be difficult to time yourself precisely, but you should get it roughly right).
• Rinse your hands thoroughly with running water, making sure to remove all traces of soap.
• Dry your hands, preferably with a paper towel; however if this is not available then use a warm hand dryer or cotton towel.
• For further protection you may also want to consider turning off the water taps with a towel or your elbows.

Experts have said the best time to wash hand is before, during, and after handling any food; after going to the toilet; after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing. Hand washing is very important because the most common means that germs are spread is by people’s hands.

‘Angry men are more likely to die before age of 70’

Image result for angry
THE next time a cold caller or traffic jam gets your blood boiling, take a deep breath and try to relax.
New research has shown that getting angry can shorten your lifespan.

Scientists have found that men who had admitted they had a short fuse when questioned around the age of 35 were more likely to be dead 35 years later than those who were less quick to anger.

Those who were among the angriest 25 per cent had a 1.57-fold increase in their risk of dying early compared to the calmest 25 per cent, the researchers from Iowa State University, United States, discovered.

The study was published in the journal Social Science & Medicine.

The relationship remained robust after taking into account factors such as income, marital status and whether or not they smoked.

Although the researchers were not investigating why the angriest were more likely to die earlier, they said previous studies had ‘linked anger with a variety of negative physiological processes’.

These include atherosclerosis – where arteries become clogged up by fatty substances known as plaques – and can lead to ‘serious and potentially fatal health events such as heart attack’ the researchers said.

“This suggests that the actual embodiment of trait anger in physiological processes may be responsible for the observed association between anger and mortality,” they wrote.

For the study, the researchers used data from a nationally representative sample of 1,307 male heads of the household who had been followed from 1968 until 2007.

Between 1968 and 1972 the men had been questioned annually about their anger levels: whether they ‘get angry fairly easily’ or whether it ‘takes a lot to get them angry’ and each man’s score was averaged for the five years. The men were aged between 20 and 40 when first questioned, with an average age in 1972 of 34 and a half.

“Being in the top quartile for anger is associated with a 1.57-fold increase in the risk of dying at follow-up compared with those in the bottom quartile,” the researchers concluded.

London-based chartered psychologist Graham Price, who treats people with anger issues, said: “People who are quick to become angry have developed exaggerated unconscious beliefs about injustice that may have been triggered by past negative experiences and have almost certainly been reinforced by excessive expression of anger over a long period.

“The way to unwind such beliefs is to accept feelings of anger, using mindfulness tools, and then withhold expressing the anger.”

He added: “Anger is a form of stress and stress increases cortisol levels in the bloodstream.

“Studies have shown that if anger or other forms of stress are maintained over long periods, negative health impacts can result, including developing IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) or increased strokes, heart attacks and other cardiac problems.”

Personal anger – such as that caused by being let go from work without compensation – can be useful as it can propel us to confront the issue, and fight for a severance package, for example.

But when it comes to impersonal anger – the “blind rage we feel when we’ve been cut off in traffic’ – it’s simply not worth the fight,” she said.

“One of the calming techniques I practice with my clients is just to focus on their breathing – when the anger flares up, notice it, acknowledge it, then step back from it and try to focus on the inhale and exhale of the breath.”

Harley Street-based psychologist Dr Becky Spelman said there are many practical things that we can each do to manage our anger levels.

1. “Take the time to consider the things in your life that you can be appreciative of – write them down and picture each clearly in your mind, ideally when you first wake up,” she said.

2. “Visualise what you really want from your life. Hold on to this vision tightly and whenever you feel frustrated come back to the visualisation and do not let go of this.

3, “This will calm you down even when you feel the rage building.

4. “It is proven that creative pursuits are an excellent way to increase calmness and wellbeing, so find a hobby or class in a creative pastime and paint, sculpt or design that anger away.

5. “And generally speaking, the least healthy people tend to be the angriest, as fitness and diet make a huge difference to our self-esteem, which is where our anger usually comes from.

6. “Find a fitness type that you enjoy and do it at least three times per week, whilst reducing sugary and processed foods from your diet, including alcohol.”

Malnutrition: 52% of Nigerian children are stunted, wasted

malnutrition
Malnutrition

•N188.3bn investment needed yearly to combat malnutrition, save 180,000 lives, avert three million cases of stunting

An estimated 52 per cent of children in Nigeria, Bangladesh, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Ethiopia and Pakistan are stunted, wasted or both and a minority grow up with adequate nutrition.

According to the latest edition of The Global Nutrition Report 2015, published last week, in New York, United States, to combat malnutrition, in Nigeria, an N188.3 billion ($837 million) investment is needed, which would save 180,000 lives, and avert three million cases of stunting a year.
A break down showed the cost of averting each case of stunting is a mere N65,700 ($292).

According to Wikipedia, stunted growth, also known as stunting and nutritional stunting, is a reduced growth rate in human development. It is a primary manifestation of malnutrition (or more precisely under-nutrition) and recurrent infections, such as diarrhea and helminthiasis, in early childhood and even before birth, due to malnutrition during fetal development brought on by a malnourished mother.
The Global Nutrition Report 2015 is the second in an annual series, covers nutrition status and programme coverage as well as underlying determinants such as food security; water, sanitation, and hygiene; resource allocations; and institutional and policy changes – globally, and for 193 countries.
According to the report, nutrition can be a driver of change or a barrier to progress, and there are actions leaders of every country should be taking to end malnutrition in all its forms.

Among the report’s key findings: One in three members of the global population is malnourished, and the problem exists in every country on the planet — yet, the strategies (or “high-impact interventions”) available to resolve it are not being implemented due to lack of money, skills, or political pressure.

Lead author of the study and senior research fellow at the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), Lawrence Haddad, said: “When one in three of us is held back, we as families, communities, and nations cannot move forward.

“This not only jeopardizes the lives of those who are malnourished, but also affects the larger framework for economic growth and sustainable development. Simply put: people cannot get anywhere near their full potential without first overcoming malnutrition.”

The report noted that childhood stunting and wasting remain serious problems: More than 160 million children worldwide under five years old are too short for their age (stunted), while more than 50 million do not weigh enough for their height (wasted). “Although countries are increasingly meeting goals for combating stunting and wasting, adult obesity—another form of malnutrition—is growing. The prevalence of obesity rose in every single country between 2010 and 2014, and one in 12 adults worldwide now has type 2 diabetes,” it noted.

Head of nutrition, Federal Ministry of Health (FMoH), Dr. Chris Osa Isokpunwu, said: “Malnutrition results in impaired cognitive development in children, which goes on to have a bearing on their entire life chances and opportunities. It takes a village to raise a child, so it is our responsibility as a community and a country to bring an end to malnutrition by supporting adequate and sufficient nutrition. By doing this we secure not just the future of our children, but also that of our country.”

Head of Advocacy & Campaign, Save the Children, David Olayemi, said: “Every child in Nigeria deserves to grow and develop adequately without the greater risks of illness and premature death that are associated with malnutrition and stunted growth. For this reason it should be our priority as a nation to invest in nutrition. The evidence also shows that improved nutrition enhances Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth.”

The report also noted that climate change is complicating global efforts to end malnutrition. “Even small and seasonal fluctuations in climate can have big impacts on food availability and disease patterns, and these in turn dramatically affect children’s survival and development. This means, for example, that babies born in India in November and December are taller on average at three years of age than those born in April through September. In a world where many are not eating enough and others are eating too much, food systems also need attention,” it noted.

The report added: “Many countries are not on target to meet World Health Assembly targets on nutrition. Most countries are off course in expanding exclusive breastfeeding, and six countries on three continents are regressing badly. Adult diabetes is increasing in 185 countries and is decreasing or stable in just five.

“Countries that are committed to reducing malnutrition have the capability to do so, according to the report. Investing in improved nutrition can have economic returns that outpace the United States (U.S.) stock market in recent decades. Investing N225 ($1) can yield up to N3,600 ($16) in economic benefits.”
The report released ahead of the United Nations General Assembly Summit where member states convened this week to adopt the Sustainable Development Goals.

According to the report, malnutrition is tied to many of the proposed goals—and when 45 per cent of all deaths of children under five are related to malnutrition, it is critical that leaders keep nutrition policy at the forefront of their decision-making. The report’s website contains profiles of 193 countries’ progress on improving nutrition.

Placing Barefoot on Ground: Access To Earth’s Healing Power

Image result for barefoot

The increased use of consumer electronics and gadgets – radio, television, computer, cell phones and other related appliances – has brought with it negative side effects on users’ health.

However, man has ignored a very vital means of improving his health, walking bare foot on the ground. Mr. Adjei Quaye, health campaigner and naturopath, who made the assertion in a health forum in Lagos said there are natural remedies from herbs and even the ground to bring succour to ailments.

Quaye said there are several man made item that deprive man from getting the much needed electrons from the earth. They include raised beds, synthetic mats, vehicles, synthetic carpeting, baby prams, footwear’s, vinyl covering the floor and even mattresses. He said that the human race is largely being bombarded with electronic gadgets all the hours of the day.

“If you were not using cell phones, someone would be calling, thereby polluting the whole atmosphere with electromagnetic waves. These waves affect our system and these electrons ionise the chemicals that enter the body and turn them to free radicals, which reduces the body’s immunity status.”

Quaye, also physical sciences lecturer at the University of Cape Coast said, “The body is like a ‘system’ made up of organs like the kidney, liver and others, then tissues, cells, molecules, atoms, nucleus and electrons. From the electrons, is produced a magnetic force.

Assuming a liver has 10 electrons, and the free radicals have taken five, it means the immune system gets weaker. So, the issue here is how to get back the lost electrons.”

He said it is all about the general wellbeing of the human body, adding that when the immune system is attacked by free radicals, the body defensive mechanism is compromised. But when the foot is placed on the ground and following the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics, energy moves from one place to another, electrons begin to flow to occupy the places where there is shortage.

It flows from the ground to the body for rejuvenation and there is also a healing process. Quaye revealed that to get replacement of the lost electrons, which is synonymous with boosting the immune system, the bare foot should be placed on the floor for as long as possible.

He said studies have shown that in children, for example, those who walk barefoot recover more quickly in case of ill health than those who don’t.

The benefits of going barefoot Pointing out that since the nerves of our organs (eye, liver, kidney, pancreas, etc) terminate in our palms and under the feet, Quaye said man is most likely to activate an organ like the kidney to function well by going barefoot, thereby giving it a natural acupuncture. Insomnia and arthritis patients, He said have shown positive results just by walking barefoot.

The incidence of fibroids, breast and prostate cancers and other disorders may reduce drastically by walking barefoot. He advised that it is a healthy practice for a pregnant woman to go barefoot.

As the activity of walking barefoot increases such other benefits as better sleep, lower stress, more calmness, relief from migraine and headache, reduced cancer incidence, improved blood pressure and improved fertility and sexuality can be attained.

He claimed that, while normalisation of the body’s biological rhythms could be attained, he however warned that diabetic patients should be careful when walking barefoot to avoid cuts.

Quaye said there are several man made item that deprive man from getting the much needed electrons from the earth. They include raised beds, synthetic mats, vehicles, synthetic carpeting, baby prams, footwear’s, vinyl covering the floor and even mattresses. He revealed that health focused manufacturers are making mattresses with magnets to improve blood and oxygen flow in the body.

How car tyres harm lungs, by researchers

Used car tyres... An invisible pollutant produced by car tyres has been found to be even more damaging to lungs than previously thought.

Invisible pollutant found to cause emphysema, DNA damage

AN invisible pollutant produced by car tyres has been found to be even more damaging to lungs than previously thought.

Researchers studying the effects of carbon black have found it causes emphysema and Deoxy Nucleic Acid (DNA)/genetic material damage in smokers – it is produced when cigarettes burn.
But because the specks invisible to the human eye are also produced when car tires wear down they warn that the effects of carbon black have been underestimated.

And the authors highlight why smoking-related lung damage is incurable – because the nanoparticles are impossible to remove once absorbed by the lungs.
The study was published in the journal e-life.

Researchers were studying why the lungs of dead smokers are black on the inside as well as the effects of carbon black on mice.
The authors found that it is the accumulation of tiny carbon black nanoparticles –previously it was thought to have been caused by either tar, aluminium or some other dark pigment.

The finding is all the more extraordinary because the nanoparticles are invisible to the human eye and just 30 to 40 nanometers wide – a human hair is 100,000 nanometers wide.
As well as damaging the lungs, they found that this black material accumulates in part of the immune system called the dendritic cells – causing damage at the genetic level.

The particles were found to cause double breaks in strands of human DNA – a condition that is very difficult for the cell to repair – and lead to chronic inflammation in the lungs.
The carbon black also produced emphysema – lung damage, which causes a chronic shortness of breath – when inhaled by mice.

Dr. James Tour of Rice University, in Houston, Texas, who analysed the effects of carbon black for the journal e-life said the finding has far-reaching implications as many products, such as tires, contain significant amounts of nanoparticulate carbon black.

“I am concerned about how this affects industry. It is going to have to change. As it gets into the air, for example through tire-tread wear, it could affect the public as well, and it is imperative that risk-assessments be conducted.”

The smaller the carbon black particles, the more toxic they were found to be, he said.
Tour and fellow authors write in e-life: “These findings largely explain the persistent and incurable nature of smoking-related lung disease.

“Because no medical means of removing accumulated lung nCB (nanoparticulate carbon black) exists, our findings underscore the need for all individuals and societies to minimize the production of and exposure to smoke-related particulate air pollution and industrial nCB.”

Co-author Professor David Corry of Baylor College of Medicine, Houston who also wrote about the effects of carbon black in the journal Nature Immunology said once breathed in, it was impossible to get rid of the carbon black particles.

He said: “You never get rid of this stuff. It will be important to conduct further studies to fully assess the spectrum of health-risk profile.”

Cassava engineered to ‘cure’ vitamin B6 deficiency

Cassava...scientists have engineered the cassava plant to produce higher levels of vitamin B6 in its storage roots and leaves. This could help to protect millions of people in Africa from serious deficiencies.

Plant scientists engineered the cassava plant to produce higher levels of vitamin B6 in its storage roots and leaves. This could help to protect millions of people in Africa from serious deficiencies.

In many tropical countries, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, cassava is one of the most important staple foods. People eat the starchy storage roots but also the leaves as a vegetable. Both have to be cooked first to remove the toxic cyanide compounds that cassava produces.

But the roots have a disadvantage: although rich in calories, in general they contain only few vitamins. Vitamin B6 in particular is present in only small amounts, and a person for whom cassava is a staple food would have to eat about 1.3 kg of it every day for a sufficient amount of this vital vitamin.

Vitamin B6 deficiency is prevalent in several African regions where cassava is often the only staple food people’s diet. Diseases of the cardiovascular and nervous systems as well as are associated with vitamin B6 deficiency.

Plant scientists at ETH Zurich and the University of Geneva have therefore set out to find a way to increase vitamin B6 production in the roots and leaves of the cassava plant. This could prevent vitamin B6 deficiency among people who consume mostly cassava.

Their project has succeeded: in the latest issue of Nature Biotechnology, the scientists present a new genetically modified cassava variety that produces several-fold higher levels of this important vitamin.

“Using the improved variety, only 500 g of boiled roots or 50 g of leaves per day is sufficient to meet the daily vitamin B6 requirement,” says Wilhelm Gruissem, professor of plant biotechnology at ETH Zurich.

The basis for the new genetically modified cassava variant was developed by Professor Teresa Fitzpatrick at the University of Geneva. She discovered the biosynthesis of vitamin B6 in the model plant thale cress (Arabidopsis thaliana). Two enzymes, PDX1 and PDX2, are involved in the synthesis of the vitamin. With the introduction of the corresponding genes for the enzymes, into the cassava genome, the researchers produced several new cassava lines that had increased levels of vitamin B6.

To determine if the increased production of the vitamin in the genetically modified cassava was stable without affected the yield, the plant scientists conducted tests in the greenhouse and in field trials over the course of several years. “It was important to determine that the genetically modified cassava consistently produced high vitamin B6 levels under different conditions,” says Gruissem.
Measurements of the metabolites confirmed that cassava lines produced several times more vitamin B6 in both roots and leaves than normal cassava. The researchers also attributed the increased production to the activity of the transferred genes, regardless of whether the plants were grown in a greenhouse or the field. The increased vitamin B6 trait remained stable even after the cassava was multiplied twice by vegetative propagation.

Previously, the researchers had analysed several hundred different cassava varieties from Africa for its natural vitamin B6 content — none had a level as high as the genetically modified variety.

Vitamin B6 from the genetically modified varieties is bioavailable, which means that humans can absorb it well and use it, as was confirmed by a research team at the University of Utrecht.

“Our strategy shows that increasing vitamin B6 levels in an important food crop using Arabidopsis genes is stable, even under field conditions. Making sure that the technology is readily available to laboratories in developing countries is equally important,” says Hervé Vanderschuren, who led the cassava research programme at ETH Zurich and recently became a professor of plant genetics at the University of Liège.

It is still unclear when and how vitamin B6-enhanced cassava will find its way to farmers and consumers. The new trait should be crossed in varieties preferred by farmers using traditional plant breeding or introduced into selected varieties using genetic engineering.

Vanderschuren hopes this can be performed in African laboratories. He has previously trained scientists on site and organised workshops to build platforms for the genetic modification of crop plants in African laboratories. “We hope that these platforms can help spread the technology to

Could roasting coffee trigger irreversible lung damage?

A cup of coffee...coffee workers may be in danger of irreversible lung diseases even as a particular liking for bitter-tasting foods and drinks such as coffee and tonic water could mean you have psychopathic tendencies
A cup of coffee...coffee workers may be in danger of irreversible lung diseases even as a particular liking for bitter-tasting foods and drinks such as coffee and tonic water could mean you have psychopathic tendencies

• Drinkers may have dark personalities as heating beans releases toxic chemicals

From a strong Americano to a frothy cappuccino, four billion cups of coffee are knocked back every day across the globe.
And behind the scenes, thousands of people work at coffee plants, roasting green coffee beans until they change into the rich-flavoured brown ones that are ground down to make a tasty drink.
But coffee workers may be in danger of irreversible lung diseases, according to an investigation by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

Roasting coffee releases a chemical called diacetyl, an organic chemical used in food flavourings, most famously in the butter-flavouring added to popcorn.
It is considered safe to eat, but studies show it can be toxic if heated and inhaled over a long period.
In the 1990s, popcorn plant workers exposed to these levels of fumes suffered serious, incurable lung diseases, after just a few months, according to a report by the United States (US) Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Specifically, they suffered obliterative bronchiolitis – a rare, irreversible form of lung disease now known as ‘popcorn workers’ lung’.
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel wanted to find out if people working in coffee roasting factories could be facing similar dangers.
Reporters there tested the air at two mid-sized roasteries in Wisconsin for diacetyl levels in the air.
They found levels were up to four times higher than the limits set by the CDC, putting workers in danger.

However the results expose problems only when coffee is roasted on an industrial scale – and are not relevant to baristas grinding the black stuff in café or to caffeine-lovers pushing down cafeterias at home.

“Diacetyl particles are small enough that they bypass hairs and mucous in the nose and throat and get into those very smallest airway passages,” Alan Barker, a pulmonary specialist at Oregon Health and Science University told Wired.

There has been a suggestive study done of coffee roasting workers, compared to people who had desk jobs in coffee plants,” he added.
“And they showed that the roasters had more things like cough and shortness of breath than those who were not closely exposed.”
Diacetyl is also released while makin bread, brewing beer, making wine, and in other food-making processes.

Meanwhile, a particular liking for bitter-tasting foods and drinks such as coffee and tonic water could mean you have psychopathic tendencies.
Psychologists have found that those with a preference for bitter tastes were more likely to exhibit signs of Machiavellianism, sadism, and narcissism.

That is, they were more prone to being duplicitous and self-serving, cold-hearted and lacking in empathy, vain and selfish, and more likely to derive pleasure from other people’s pain.
The findings of the study provide the ‘first empirical evidence that bitter taste preferences are linked to malevolent personality traits,’ said the researchers from Innsbruck University in Austria, who studied 1,000 people in two separate experiments.

“The results suggest that how much people like bitter-tasting foods and drinks is stably tied to how dark their personality is.”
Bitter foods include unsweetened cocoa, black coffee, radishes and the quinine in tonic water.
For the first experiment, 500 men and women were shown a long list of foods with equal numbers of sweet, salty, sour and bitter foods. These included chocolate cake, bacon, vinegar and radishes.
Having a wider face has been linked with higher levels of attraction and aggression, and recent research suggested it may also be a sign of psychopathy.

A study of students and prison inmates found that men with a higher facial width-to-height ratio were more likely to exhibit what’s known as ‘self-centred impulsivity’.
They also showed signs of ‘fearless dominance’ as well as a tendency to blame other people for problems.

Self-centred impulsivity is a category of traits including Machiavellian egocentricity and is the tendency to consider only personal needs, with a disregard for the interests of anyone else.
Those high in self-centred impulsivity also tend to neglect the social norms and regulations that the rest of us live by.

Fearless dominance, meanwhile, includes a tendency to embrace risk without any fear, showing limited reaction to awful events that would make the rest of us panic – combined with a tendency to appear charming and influential.

They were asked to rate how much they liked each of them on a six-point scale ranging from dislike strongly to like strongly. The participants, who had an average age of 35, then completed four separate personality questionnaires.

The first measured their levels of aggression by asking them to rate how much statements such as ‘Given enough provocation, I may hit someone’ sounded like them.

Eat peas, corn, others to ‘stave off cancer’

Corn silk

Eating plenty of green peas, soybeans, corn and blue cheese, could help you live longer by warding off disease, experts have discovered.

The foods, all rich in a compound called spermidine, could help stave off cancer, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease, among others.
Scientists at the Weizmann Institute in Israel discovered that spermidine reverses the body’s circadian rhythm, making it ‘younger’ and less prone to the age-related diseases.
They note that falling levels of polyamines, compounds that are present in all living cells, cause circadian rhythms to slow down.

This effect was reversed by a dietary supplementation containing spermidine, when given to mice.
Senior author, Dr. Gad Asher, said: “This discovery demonstrates the tight intertwining between circadian clocks and metabolism and opens new possibilities for nutritional interventions that modulate the clock’s function.
“Impaired circadian rhythmicity has been linked to a wide variety of age-related diseases, including cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and inflammation.”
Polyamines are essential molecules present in all living organisms.
They are derived from dietary sources and are synthesized by the body’s cells, in turn regulating a variety of key cellular processes, such as cell growth and proliferation.
Asher and his team of researchers suspected that polyamines might also play a role in circadian biology, because they are known to influence the clock’s functions.
When young mice were treated with a drug that inhibits polyamine synthesis, their circadian clock slowed down by around 11 minutes per day, compared to those mice who received no treatment.
In contrast, adult mice that received extra spermidine in their drinking water had clocks that ran about eight minutes faster, than those of untreated mice.

The effects of polyamines on the circadian clock were less pronounced in mice than in cells due to the tight regulation of these critcial compounds in their natural physiological context.

However, even subtle clock deviations have been associated with a wide variety of metabolic and age-related diseases.

Carrots slow age-related vision loss, say researchers

Carrots
Your parents were right – carrots really can help your eyesight. Pigments called carotenoids – which give vegetables like carrots, peppers and spinach their colours – can slow the progression of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), researchers have found.

The condition is one of the most common causes of vision loss in older people – and is also on the rise.
A recent study published in Lancet Global Health estimated there will be 196 million sufferers by 2020 and 288 million by 2040.

The Harvard University-led study used data from a population survey that tracked more than 100,000 over-50s over a period of 25 years.

It found that those who consumed the highest levels of the carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin had a 40 per cent lower risk of developing the advanced form of the condition than those who ate the least.
Lutein and zeaxanthin are found in high concentrations in the macula of the eye, where they are known as the macular pigment.

The macular pigment protects the macula by interacting with free radicals to prevent cell damage and by filtering out damaging blue light. Good sources of lutein and zeaxanthin are dark leafy vegetables and eggs.

The study also found those who consumed the highest levels of some of the other forms of carotenoids – alpha-carotene, beta-carotene and beta-cryptoxanthin – had a 25 per cent to 35 per cent lower risk of advanced AMD.

Carrots and sweet potato are sources of alpha and beta-carotene, while beta-cryptoxanthin is found in fruits like oranges and peaches.
The researchers did not find any link between carotenoids and the intermediate form of AMD, however.

“This study suggests that carotenoids may slow worsening of AMD once it occurs,” the researchers concluded in the journal JAMA Opthalmology. AMD, although painless, causes the loss of central vision, usually in both eyes.

How a Free 7-Day Eating Plan Can Help You Manage Your Diabetes

Hearing the words “You have diabetes” can strike fear in anyone’s heart, because diabetes leads to so many other frightening health problems: Blindness, hearing loss, heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, kidney disease, and more.

How a Free 7-Day Eating Plan Can Help You Manage Your Diabetes

Living with diabetes is more common than most of us know—in fact, more than 25 million Americans have been diagnosed with diabetes.  If you or a loved one suffers from the disease, you know that most complications can be prevented by keeping blood glucose levels in check, being physically active, and eating a clean diet.
It’s a lot of information to digest, and many who are first diagnosed are overwhelmed with the enormity of lifestyle changes. One of the biggest is usually a complete overhaul of their diet.
But, unless you’re nutritionist or dietician, it can be complicated to learn how to track calories, fat, protein, carbohydrates, fiber, and cholesterol. Diabetics need to eat a balanced mix of foods that keep their blood sugar from crashing.
This involves monitoring their glucose levels multiple times a day, usually before and after meals. And, that entails a meal plan that details what foods they will eat throughout each day to keep their levels steady.
There’s also a common misconception that diabetics have to adhere to a strict list of only healthy foods. Not true! Diabetics can eat almost anything in moderation, just like someone who doesn’t have the disease. This is where having a detailed meal plan comes in handy.
Fortunately, there’s a company called QualityHealth.com that offers diabetes sufferers a FREE* Diabetes Meal Plan, where all the challenging work in creating a 7-day meal plan is done for you.
The first in a series, this 7-day plan features meals and snacks for every day of the week. The recipes are tasty and designed to help you meet your diabetes management goals.
You can even share them with family and friends who want to eat healthier.
A new healthy diet, along with medication and a physician-supervised exercise program, should keep you living a normal, healthy life for a long time to come. And, you can still enjoy dessert if you have a sweet tooth, or indulge in a glass of wine if you desire. The simple pleasures in life don’t have to come to a screeching halt with this controllable disease.
If you or someone close to you has been diagnosed with diabetes, a QualityHealth.com free meal plan can be a real lifesaver to get you started on the right path. Each day a person with diabetes is not eating right, they could potentially be doing more damage to their body.
Don’t let another day pass by—click here to see how you can qualify to get this Diabetes Meal Plan FREE.
When signing up you will also be asked several questions about your health history, and the health history of your household. Answering these questions will help QualityHealth customize your online health experience, and also provide you with some additional offers such as the chance to get a free diabetes meter, savings of up to $200 off prescription co-pays, and even a Pharmacy Savings Card that may entitle you to up to 75 percent off at your local pharmacy.

What Every Woman Age 30 and Above Ought to Know about Losing Weight

My Dear Blog Readers...

If you are a woman, aged 30+ and above, and currently struggling to lose weight, then I want you to kindly read this letter to the end.....

Do you currently feel sluggish, out of breath when climbing stairs and also find it very hard to fit into many of the dresses in your wardrobe....

Then you also need to pay attention to this letter as well because I am about to REVEAL the secret you need for you to lose weight easily.

These 3 things are very IMPORTANT & Crucial in your fight against FAT...

When you KNOW these 3 things and you APPLY them, you will find it so simple & easier than before to shake off excess fat from your body.

Without wasting time, let's me share them with you below:

  • #1. To Lose Weight, Your Body Must Burn More Calories Than It Consumes

If you have excess fat on your body, the fail safe, guaranteed method to get rid of it is by making your body burn more calories than you consume in the meals you eat on a daily basis.

But where most people fail with this method is when they try to go on extreme diets that restrict them  or starve them to lose weight.

Some people eat just one meal in a day, everyday for many weeks. In the process, they end up with stomach ulcers .

I am not sure if you've tried these extreme diets and starvation before yourself...

But have you noticed that you will lose a lot of weight quickly, but since you can't starve yourself forever, you gain back the excess fat quickly when you start eating regular food again.

But rather than starving yourself, all in the name of losing weight, what If I tell you that you can eat up to 5 times daily and still lose weight?

I know this is possible, because I have had hundreds of clients who spent their days eating 4-5 times daily and still ended up losing 7kg, 10kg, 15kg, 27kg etc.

The Secret is very Simple...

These clients of mine eat NATURAL Nigerian fat burning foods that are super low in calories.

This enables their body to burn more calories from their body than they consume and make them lose weight easily in the end.

  • #2. Sugar Will Make You Fat!

I know you've heard that phrase that sugar is bad for you.

Personally, I call it POISON.

That is because I know that eating too much of sugar can get stored as fat in your body and also  gradually reduce the quality of your life.

Too much sugar in your body can make your body's insulin get tired and find it hard to process the excess sugar, which is what causes Type II diabetes and liver diseases

And guess what....

Most of the foods out there that you probably eat at the moment contains a lot of sugar.

And I am talking about foods such as.....Cake, meatpie, sausage roll, donuts, Chocolates, Starch, Fufu (akpu), Soft drinks, Alcohol, Milk shakes  etc.

The sugar content in these foods is so high, that your body stores the excess that it does not use into your body's fat storage cells.

And this manifest in the form of fat on your arms, your thighs, neck and most especially in your belly area which is the most stubborn place to burn fat.

For you to lose weight rapidly, you have to cut sugary food from your diet, and replace it with NATURAL foods with lower sugar content, and you have to do it fast!
  • #3. Sitting Too Much Everyday Will Stop You From Losing Weight.
Right now, you are probably reading this letter while sitting on a chair and its possible you've been sat in it for the past 2-3 hours or more.

If you spend a lot of time sitting behind a desk at work, or spend most of your time daily sitting on a sofa watching TV, you might find out that you will gain weight easily.

In the fitness world, we call this a "sedentary lifestyle".

This lifestyle  will slow down the rate at which your body burn calories and the enzymes responsible for breaking down fat will start switching off.

That is not all, the less you move, the less sugar your body burn (remember the sugar in the food you eat) and the more these sugar get stored in the form of fat.

This means that, if you want to lose weight, you need to engage in a form of exercise that will help your body burn more calories off.

It does not have to be a gym. You can also workout at home by doing simple high intensity workouts for 15-20 minutes to speed up your metabolism and burn more calories.

So What's My Point?

If you want to lose weight easily, and drop 2-3 dress sizes and become slimmer with an amazing toned body, you need to cut out sugary foods from your diet, and shift your lifestyle slightly to include period of activity, your body will lose the weight "EASILY" and "SPEEDILY".

There is a 100% SAFE & HEALTHY way of doing this that is available to only a selected few and I currently use it to help my client lose weight rapidly.

And I would love to share this method with YOU so you can get rid of stubborn fat and help you get your "slimmer body and flatter belly" back.

You see, losing weight is MUCH easier that you think, if you know the exact  thing to do that will help you lose weight.
